Charles McKinney

Burlington, NC Charles Roger McKinney, age 64 went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 31, 2014 at UNC Hospital after a 10 year battle with cancer and 4 months of failing health. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of 35 years to Fonda Harrison McKinney who survives. Roger retired after 31 years with the US Postal Service as a city mail carrier. He was a graduate of Williams High School and of the Baptist faith. Roger served 2 years in the Vietnam War as a US Army sergeant . He received a purple heart after being wounded in combat. Roger was President of the Hidden Hills Homeowners Association for Hyco Lake and was unofficially known as the "Mayor" of Hyco Lake. He was a member of the Nautique Owner's Association and will fondly be remembered for his excellent barefoot skiing techniques. Roger was a loving and devoted husband, son, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Fonda H. McKinney of the home; sons, Joseph Brent McKinney and wife, Tena of Snow Camp and Brandon Lee Roney and wife, Lori of Burlington; grandchildren, Zeke and Hannah Roney; step grandchildren, Tyler, Katelyn and Preston Gallagher; brother, Randy McKinney and wife, Cathy of Burlington. He was a favorite Uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, A. Charles McKinney and Virginia Love McKinney. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the 7th floor Neurosciences Hospital at UNC for their care of Roger and our family. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 4:00 pm at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Howard Thompson and Pastor Clarence Toney. The burial will follow with military honors at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
