John Flood

John Flood

John James Flood, formerly of Brattleboro, VT and Manchester, NH died Thursday, August 6, 2009. He was born in Brattleboro, VT on October 21, 1924, the son of the late Edward T. and Carla Ebbighausen Flood. He attended St. Michael's School in Brattleboro, graduating in 1942. After serving in the US Army Air Corps during WW II, he attended the University of Vermont and graduated from the School of Law of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, in 1951 with the Juris Doctor degree. In 1952, he was admitted to the Bar of the Vermont Supreme Court and subsequently to the Bars of several Federal Courts. In 1955, he became staff counsel to the member companies of New Hampshire Insurance Company from which he retired in 1985 as Vice president and Counsel. During his professional career, the family resided in Manchester, NH; since retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Flood devoted their time to travels, wintering in Texas and resided in Sturgeon, MO from 1991 to 2008 at which time they moved to Burlington, NC to be closer to family. Mr. Flood was a member of the American Legion Post 1916, Columbus, NM and the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Burlington, NC. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Winona Louise Rice. He is also survived by four children: Kathleen Scanlon of Dover, NH, Dorothy Reed of Litchfield, NH, Martha Flood Mallinson of Quenington, England, and Thomas Flood of Burlington, NC. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two children, Miriam Flood Galenstein, Patrick Flood, also by his parents, brothers; Thomas Flood, Richard Flood, and sisters, Dorothy Stetson and Elizabeth Levasseur. There are no calling hours. Cremation is being arranged by Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. in Burlington. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Thursday August 13, 2009 at St. Michael's Church, 47 Walnut St., Brattleboro, VT followed by burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215 or to the charity of one's choice.
