John Smith

Burlington, NC John Ray Smith, age 77, of Edinburgh Drive died on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the Hospice home. He was a native of Surry county and the husband of 50 years to Bettina "Tina" Newsom Smith who survives. John retired after 30 years with AT&T / Lucent and was a member of The Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Kernersville. John graduated from Western Carolina University and was a veteran of the US Army serving as a Medic. He enjoyed woodworking and collecting antiques. John was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Jan Smith Westmoreland and her husband, Randy of Spotsylvania, Virginia; sons and daughters-in-law, James Andrew "Andy" Smith of Graham, Timothy Ray "Tim" Smith and his wife, Lisa of Kernersville, Van Alan Smith and his wife, Kathy of Burlington; grandchildren, Michael Tyler Westmoreland, Paul Ryan Westmoreland, Matthew Logan Westmoreland, Andrew Kyle "Drew" Boone, Curtis Newsom Smith, William Hamilton Smith, James Hill Smith, Laura Catherine Smith, Reagan Elizabeth Smith, Kennedy May Smith, Tabitha Shea Martin, Robert Thomas Martin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Smith and his wife, Joanne of Pilot Mountain, Freddie Smith and his wife, Sylvia of Pilot Mountain. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Raymond and Nonnie Hill Smith. The family would like to thank Dr. Pandit and the nurses and staff of The Cancer Center and the Oncology unit at Alamance Regional Medical Center also the nurses and staff of Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of John during his illness. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Paul Spainhour and the burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Elon. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
