Barbara Spinks Steele

on February 25th 2023. She was the wife of the late Bobby Ray Steele for more than 55 years.

She lived a long full life. Barbara was born in Greensboro, NC on January 15, 1936 and moved

to Burlington when she was 3 years old as her father and mother, John Spinks and Gladys Spinks

opened Spinks Shoe Repair Shop on Worth Street in Burlington. They operated this business

until John’s and Gladys’s death.

    Barbara attended Hillcrest Elementary School and graduated from Williams High School in 1954.

She graduated from Elon College in 1958, she taught at Saxapahaw, Alexander Wilson and

Altamahaw Ossipee Elementary schools until her retirement.

    She is survived by 3 daughters, Jamie Lynn Overman (husband Billy Overman), VirginiaDawn Whitehead (late husband Duncan Whitehead) and Lori Ann Riley (husband Curtis Riley); step son, Tony R. Steele (wife, Cathey); 6 grandchildren, Bill Overman, Andy Overman, Shana Overman Allred, Matt Overman, Cody Steele, and Christian Anderson; step grandchildren, Christina Steele (Gene), Shanella Steele (Wayne) and Anthony R. Steele;  great grandchildren Alexis Allred, Tyler Overman and 6 step great grandchildren and 11 step great great grandchildren.

There will be no formal visitation or memorial service. The family will have a private memorial

later.
