Mrs. Barbara Sexton Sturgill, cherished wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 88.
Born in Norton, Virginia, Barbara was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Sexton and the late Virginia Reed Sexton. A graduate of John I. Burton High School, Class of 1955, she carried the values of her upbringing - grace, resilience and curiosity – throughout her life.
Barbara’s greatest joy was her family. She poured her heart into caring for her beloved husband, Ron, their four sons and the generations that followed. Her nurturing sprit extended beyond her home, reflected in her active membership with the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Burlington Woman’s Club.
A passionate genealogist, Barbara meticulously documented over 5,000 individuals across more than twenty family trees, building a legacy of connection and history for future generations. Her love of gardening was equally profound – her home bloomed with vibrant life, inside and out. Friends and family often turned to her for wisdom on plants and flowers, and in her final months, she lovingly prepared over 15 Plumeria cuttings to share with others, a living gift of beauty and remembrance.
Barbara is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Ronald Bruce Sturgill; her sons, Gregory (Beverly), Michael, Rick and Bryan (Robin); six grandchildren, Ronnie Sturgill (Laurel), Julia Camardo, Emily Morgan (Chris), Rebecca Cox (Braxton), Virginia Perkey (Kenneth) and Riley Sturgill; nine great grandchildren, Sam Sturgill, Ian Sturgill, Caroline Jacobs, Levi Morgan, Mackenzie Morgan, Silas Morgan, Hazel Cox, Naomi Cox and Emilea Cox; her sister, Dorothy Domby (Steve); and a niece, Lorrie Sgarrella (Bill).
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory at 2205 S. Church St., Burlington, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Barbara’s life was a garden of love, wisdom and generosity – and her memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Burlington Woman’s Club, 317 S. Main St., Burlington, NC 27215 or to the Alamance Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 8000, Graham, NC 27253.
