Betty Mae Barkley Mitchell, 94, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at The Homeplace, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty is remembered as being one of the kindest people, an incredible mother and cherished as the greatest "Bubba" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her warm spirit and generous heart were evident in every aspect of her life. She was a remarkable cook, whose culinary talents brought comfort and joy, and she took great delight in tending to her flowers, sewing, and puzzling over crosswords, activities through which she expressed her creativity and patience.
Her strong sense of community was highlighted by her proud membership in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Burlington, where she contributed to the life and fellowship of her congregation.
Betty is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Patti Bates and her husband Hal, and Lynn Johnson and her husband Sonny. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Elizabeth Bates, Robert Bates, Mary Catherine Campbell, Emily Brown, and Eric Howard, and great grandchildren, Isabella Campbell and Julianna Campbell. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, Don Barkley, and his wife Frankie, as well as her brother-in-law, Jerry Dellinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eugene Mitchell, who passed in 1982; her daughter, Donna Mitchell Howard; parents, Archie Miller and Mary Sue Turner Barkley and her sister, Sue Dellinger.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Cleveland Memorial Park, located at 1225 College Ave, Shelby, NC 28152 by Rev. Powell Sykes.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Homeplace as well as Hospice Authoracare for the kind and compassionate care of Betty during her time there.
