Betty Hicks Duncan

d. Apr 30, 2026

Betty Faye Hicks Duncan passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 30, 2026. A native of Burlington, North Carolina, Betty was born on Christmas Day, 1938, to Robert Frederick Hicks and Virginia Fuqua Hicks.

She graduated from Walter Williams High School in Burlington, NC in 1957 and Mary Elizabeth School of Nursing in Raleigh, NC in 1959. In July of that same year, she married Patrick Duncan, and during the early years of their marriage she worked as a nurse. Betty had a passion for nursing and caring for people, but her greatest calling was as a homemaker. She created a warm and welcoming home, often hosting visiting missionaries and clergy. Betty found great joy in preparing meals that brought family and friends together. She was truly the heart of her home.

Her greatest joy was loving her husband of 66 years and her children, faithfully serving the Lord in all she did. Her laughter was a gift to everyone who knew her. Betty and Patrick settled in Graham, NC where they lived for more than 50 years. Betty grew up attending Ireland Street Chapel and later faithfully served as church pianist for two decades.

She became a devoted member of Beacon Baptist Church in Burlington, NC in 1989. She also enjoyed teaching piano and, for two years, served as a representative for the Alamance County Chapter of the National Piano Teachers Guild of America.

Patrick tirelessly cared for Betty for many years as her health began to decline. Most recently Betty and Patrick were residents of Countryside Retirement Village in Stokesdale, NC. She received excellent care from nurses and staff who loved and tended to her faithfully.

She is survived by her husband, F. Patrick Duncan, her children, Daniel Patrick Duncan of Greensboro, NC, Jeanne D. Ennis Holley (David) of Greensboro, NC, Dr. Gabriel Thomas Duncan (Jordana) of Holly Springs, NC, as well as eleven grandchildren: Corbin Duncan, Carli Duncan, Cayden Duncan, Cami Duncan, Emily Oliveto (Trey), Ethan Duncan (Emily), Liz Roland (Ben), Dr. Luke J. Ennis (Mackenzie), Nathanael Ennis, Meadow Duncan and Noah Duncan and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, John David Duncan, her son-in-law, Dr. Michael J. Ennis, and her sister, Sarah Farlow.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 2:00PM at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Greg Barkman, Pastor Michael Karns and Pastor Bob LaTour. The burial will follow at Graham Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:45-1:45PM prior to the service.
