Betty Elaine Swink May, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at the Hospice Home. She was born on November 22, 1931 in Alamance County.

Betty was a member of Graham United Methodist Church. In her younger years she worked at Western Electric but when she started having children she loved being a homemaker. Betty enjoyed working in her yard, planting flowers, canning the vegetables out of the garden and shopping. The mountains were her happy place, Valley Crucis is where she and her late husband spent from Spring to Fall every year. But most of all she loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Michele Lowe and her husband Jack; a loving daughter-in-law, Valerie Vaughn; her grandchildren that she adored, Meredith Vaughn and her husband Dustin Cranford, Cameron Vaughn, Ethan Lowe, Jared Lowe and his wife Lauren; a sister, Ellen Nichols; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty has now been reunited with her loving husband of forty years, Craig “Dobby” May; her sons, Fred Thomas “Tommy” Vaughn, Jr. and John Dean Vaughn; her father, Glenn W. Swink; her mother, Elaine H. Huddleston; her beloved step-father, Dick Huddleston; and a sister, Glenda Bivens that have preceded her in death.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all of the hospice nurses and caregivers who cared for their mother during her illness; and extends a special thank you to Ruby Atkins, Beverly Herring, Wendy Taylor, Charlotte Hoy, Melinda Holmes, Cheryl Wheeler, and Lyn Miller. Also, to Angela Bowden who was a special friend and caregiver of Betty’s for several years. The exceptional loving care and compassion provided by each of them meant so much to the family during this time.
