Billy Ray Gusler, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on September 12, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on April 3, 1937, in Alamance County, where he nurtured his passions and built a life that touched the hearts of many.
Billy dedicated an impressive 60 years of his life to his career as an auto parts salesman at Southern Automotive in Greensboro, working alongside his brother. His commitment and work ethic were unparalleled, and after retirement, he sought new horizons by furthering his education to work for NAA insurance for over 13 years. This journey exemplified his lifelong love for learning and his desire to make meaningful contributions to his community.
Billy’s spirit was as vibrant as the passions he pursued. An avid competition shooter with military rifles, he won numerous awards throughout his shooting career, and his excitement for accuracy was contagious among friends and family. Additionally, Billy had an adventurous spark that drove him to drag racing. Alongside his family, he gained recognition from the North Carolina Drag Racing Association as one of the first racing families in Alamance County and were also members of the East Coast Drag Racing Hall of Fame, a testament to their bond and shared love for the sport.
He is survived by his loving wife, Meleady Gusler, who stood by his side through all of life's ups and downs, children; David Gusler (Cissy Gasque), Gary Gusler, and Sherry Holt (Mark), instilling in them the values of hard work and passion. Billy was also a cherished step-father to Michael Massey (Sarah), and a proud grandfather to Hannah Evans, Nathan Gusler, Taylor Gusler, and Emily Massey, who will forever treasure the memories and lessons he imparted.
Billy leaves a legacy that extends beyond his immediate family. His sister, Shirley Gusler Ashley, along with his brothers Jack Gusler (Mary) and Nelson Gusler (Pat), have fond memories of their brother, while numerous nieces and nephews will carry on his spirit of adventure and love for family.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Noel Gusler Sr. and Pearl Murphy Gusler, and his brother, Noel Gusler Jr.
A service to celebrate Billy’s life will be held at 1:00PM on Thursday, September 18, at Cornerstone Baptist Church with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:45 prior to the service at the church.
