Obituary

Carl Willie Sharpe, 81, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, just three days before his 82nd birthday.

Born into a farming family, Carl carried his love of farming throughout his life and passed it down through generations—from working in tobacco fields to simply growing tomatoes and watermelons in the garden with his family. He lived a life centered around family, horses, dogs, and the outdoors.

To his family, he was lovingly known as “Hoppy,” a name given to him by his granddaughter Caroline when she was little and couldn’t quite say “Poppy.” The name stuck and became one he proudly carried with family and friends. Horses were an important part of Carl’s life and led him to meet his wife, Patsy, at the saddle club. They were married for 55 years and shared a life filled with family, horses, and many lifelong friendships. Carl was a talented blacksmith and horseman.

He spent many years working with and training horses and teaching horseback riding to families throughout Alamance County. He and Patsy spent many days at horse shows, where they made friendships that lasted a lifetime. Dogs were also an important part of Carl’s life. Over the years, he trained and hunted with many dogs, from beagles to pointers. Many great dogs came into his life, but Rudy held an especially special place in his heart.

Carl loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Above all, Carl loved his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and passing along the things he had learned throughout his life. His family will always treasure the memories, stories, and traditions they shared with Hoppy.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Mary Katherine Sharpe Smith and husband, Mark; grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Hall and husband, Ben, and Benjamin Dale Smith and wife, Nicole; great-grandchildren, Benji, Ella, Garrison, Lawson, and Colton; and siblings, Roy Sharpe, William Sharpe, and Faye Sharpe. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Patsy Truitt Sharpe; son, David Lee Sharpe; parents, Carl and Addie Winstead Sharpe; and siblings, Raymond Sharpe, Jay Sharpe, Michael Sharpe, and Larry Sharpe.

The family will have a private service at a later date.
