Carole Elizabeth Hackett Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Guilford County on March 31, 1942, to the late John Henry Hackett and Lillian Carleen Barber Hackett. She was the wife of 52 years to the late Curtis Wayne Smith, who passed away in December 2012. Reunited with him on his birthday, October 6, she chose that special day to go home to be with her husband.
Carole attended Westside Fellowship and Harvest Baptist Church with her family and lived in the Gibsonville community all her life. In her earlier years, she worked at Alamance County Hospital, Allen-Bradley Co. and Precision Fabrics in Greensboro, before joining her husband on their family farm. Carole helped build Smith Farms into what it is today alongside her two sons and their families. She filled many roles at Smith Farms, working as the bookkeeper, purchaser, customer service representative, and local greenhouse operator for many years. Known for her friendly personality, she could often be seen at the Smith Farms’ Veggie Barn helping customers with her dog Copper by her side.
She enjoyed eating out with her family at Western Steakhouse and Harbor Inn. Carole also enjoyed word searches, listening to live music and watching nature outside her window, mostly the hummingbirds. Whenever someone asked if she wanted to go anywhere …Carole was ready. If it was just riding around the neighborhood, sightseeing, riding to the beach or to the mountains, she was always ready to get out of the house and spend time with her family.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of Carole’s caregivers; Maria, Lou, Sandy and Trish. Thanks also to AuthoraCare, Ashton Health & Rehabilitation, the hospice nurses, Jasmine and Ruby for all their loving care, compassion and thoughtfulness that was given to their mother during her illness.
Survivors include her devoted sons, Claude and his wife Tamara, and Craven and his wife Kim; her grandchildren that she adored, Camron and his wife Amanda, Collin, Cooper and Conner; and a great grandson, Bennett; a sister-in-law, Edna Jo Hackett; her canine companion, Copper that stood by her to the end; and her extended farm family; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Carole has now been reunited with her parents, John Henry and Lillian Carleen Barber Hackett; her loving husband, Curtis; and her brother, Worth Hackett.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Carole will be held at 2:00pm Monday, October 12, 2026 at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church Cemetery by Rev. Allen Myers. The family will receive friends from 4:00PM to 6:00PM Sunday, October 11, 2026 at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.
Memorials can be made to AuthoraCare, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 and to Apple’s Chapel Cemetery Fund, 7345 NC Hwy 61 North, Gibsonville, NC 27249.
