Carolyn Kurfirst Ashby, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and devout Catholic, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and compassion. Born on October 1, 1949, in Paterson, New Jersey, Carolyn was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, where her journey of service and deep spirituality began.
Carolyn was the loving wife of the late Kenneth Ashby, with whom she shared many years of marriage and devotion before his passing. Her commitment to family continued throughout her life, and she raised her two children, Lewis Brandon and Heather Lutz, in Burlington, North Carolina, instilling in them strong values, deep faith, and endless love.
A proud graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she earned her Bachelor of Social Work, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Carolyn dedicated her career to social work, helping and advocating for others with quiet strength and compassion.
She was a devoted member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington, where her faith found a welcoming and vibrant home. Carolyn’s Catholic faith was the foundation of her life. She was a professed Secular Franciscan since October 8, 2006, and an active member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Fraternity, where she served as both Vice Minister and Formation Director. Her love for God was unwavering, and her devotion was felt by all who spoke with her. She joyfully shared her Franciscan knowledge and spirit, touching countless hearts within her faith community.
Carolyn is survived by her two children, Lewis Brandon (Jessica) and Heather Lutz (Robert); her five cherished grandchildren, Maci Lutz, Corbin Brandon, Isaiah Brandon, Norah Brandon, and Kenley Brandon; and her two loving sisters, Kate Olsson (Rick) and Karen Kurfirst (Bruce) all of whom will carry her memory and legacy forward. She was known for her warmth, her kindness, and her generous heart — and she will be missed more than words can express.
