Chester Eugene Gerringer

Chester Eugene “Texas” Gerringer, 81, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026 at Liberty Commons following a brief illness. He was born in Alamance County on September 3, 1945 to the late Floyd Harmon Gerringer and Gloria Swanson Garner Gerringer and was the husband of 60 years to Edna Fay Perry of the home.

Chester was a man whom his family would describe as reliable. His occupation was welding, duration being over 29 years. He worked endlessly, rising to the sound of his train alarm at 5am, to provide the best life as possible for those he held dear. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, puzzles of all sorts and just about any other pitter pattering he could get himself into. He instilled on those surviving him hard work and determination, demonstrating how to live off the land and value the smallest of things. He sought every opportunity to create a memory. As we remember him, we remember the smell of Old Spice, the rumbling of his Chevy coming down the driveway, the overalls he would have all the grandkids in and the summers we didn’t realize would be gone too soon.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; daughters, Brenda Marie Soots (Howard), Gloria Darlene Gerringer; son, David Eugene Gerringer (Lisa); grandchildren, Dewey Lee Cheek, Amanda Fay Cheek (Justin), Timothy Howard Soots; great grandchildren, Hunter Lee Cheek, Hailey Anne Cheek, Haven Gray Cheek, Aria Faye Merchant, Justice Truth Merchant; brother, Steve Gerringer; sisters, Teresa Smithey, Thelma Helbert and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Gerringer and brother, Carson Gerringer.

A service to celebrate Chester’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Ken Smith with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:45 – 1:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.
