Curtis Alvis Matherly Sr., 78, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at his residence. He was born on October 19, 1947, to the late Leonard Spencer Matherly and Nellie Mae Harris Matherly. He was the devoted husband of 58 years to his beloved wife, Joy Lynn Jobe Matherly.
A 1967 graduate of Eastern High School, Curtis proudly served three years in the United States Army and later dedicated 37 years of his career to Sears. He was a hardworking, devoted family man who took great pride in his family and cherished every moment spent with them.
Curtis adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If he wasn't at a ballgame cheering on his grandchildren or great-grandchildren, you could often find him building something. He enjoyed attending car shows with friends and family, but above all else, his greatest joy was simply being surrounded by the people he loved.
Curtis will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving wife, Joy Lynn Jobe Matherly; son, Curtis A. Matherly Jr.; daughter, Kimberly Lynn Matherly; grandchildren, Shane Dalton Matherly and wife, Megan Matherly, Nichole Lynn Matherly, and Ashley Megan Jarrett; and great-grandchildren, Wesley Shane Matherly, McKensie Blake Matherly, Greyson Paul Matherly, and Dawson Brooks Matherly.
He is also survived by his brothers, Bill Matherly and wife, Caroline; Johnny Matherly, late wife Brenda; H.B. Matherly and wife, Brenda; and Robert Matherly and wife, Lisa; and sisters, Juanita Smith, late husband Ralph; Linda Boyer, late husband Wally; Janet Poole and husband, Randy; and Delores Matherly.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and three brothers.
A service to celebrate Curtis's life will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Inurnment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive family and friends from 9:30 – 10:45 prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the family home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Curtis's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project Foundation or to the U.S. Military Honor Guard.
Curtis leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a legacy of love, and a family who will carry his memory in their hearts forever. His greatest accomplishment was not measured by the years he worked or the things he built, but by the love he gave to his family and the lives he touched along the way. He was deeply loved, he will be forever missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
