Dewey Alvis Oakes, age 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025. He was born on February 7, 1948, in Person County, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents; Jonah Oakes and Evelyn Annie Weaver Oakes, two brothers, and four sisters.
Dewey spent much of his life on the road as a dedicated long-haul truck driver. Over the years, he worked for Pilot Freight Carriers, Burlington Industries, and Wicker Trucking Services, earning the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of those who knew him for his strong work ethic and quiet dependability.
Dewey was a man of many talents and endless curiosity. He loved to read and was always eager to learn something new. Over the years, he taught himself needlepoint, macramé, sewing, woodworking, electricity, plumbing, welding, car repair, and sustainable building techniques —there was little he could not figure out with a bit of time and determination. He especially loved his tools and could often be found tinkering in the garage, happily immersed in a project.
He was known for his love of good coffee and good company, often visiting local establishments where he would enjoy a cup and “tell lies”—his playful way of describing the stories he shared to bring laughter to those around him. Dewey had a gift for making people smile, and his humor will be deeply missed.
He also had a generous heart and a deep desire to help others. Dewey freely gave his time and talents to those in need, whether through one-on-one acts of kindness or by serving with organizations such as Alcovets and Baptists on Mission at Grove Park Church. His selflessness and quiet service left a lasting impact on many lives.
Above all, Dewey deeply loved his children and grandchildren. His pride in them was evident to anyone who knew him, and he cherished every moment spent with his family.
Dewey is survived by his son, John Oakes, and his wife, Jann, along with their daughter, Kinny. He is also survived by his daughter, Stephanie Gable, and her husband, Stephen, and their children, Wesley and Levy as well as three sisters: Hildred Garland, Marjorie Brown, and Ruby Jones. Dewey’s love for his family was unwavering, and his memory will live on in their hearts forever. He is also remembered by many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 4 PM on Wednesday, September 24 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Dewey’s memory to Alcovets; 7 SE Court Square #101, Graham, NC 27253.
The family also appreciates the Alcovets for their support of a Celebration of Life to take place at Dewey’s home at a later date.
