Donald James Winkler, age 73, was born January 20, 1953 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and passed away peacefully at his home in Snow Camp, NC on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 after several months of failing health. His memory will be deeply cherished by family and friends alike.

     A life defined by commitment and honor, Donald dedicated over 20 years to service in the U.S. Army. Serving with distinction in the 82nd Airborne, he exemplified courage and loyalty until his honorable retirement. After concluding his military career, Donald transitioned thoughtfully into civilian life. He retired from Hunt Electric Supply, having built a second career grounded in reliability and hard work.  Donald was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching NASCAR races, but most of all loved spending time with his granddaughter, Haydin.

     Donald’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Ashley Thomas and husband, Nicholas Howe; cherished granddaughter, Haydin Howe; and two sisters, Denise Klaips and Jane Robinson. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Lepper Winkler and a sister, Doris Hackney.

     The family will have a memorial gathering at a later date.
