Donna Mae Rhymer Spangler, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at her daughter’s home, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on January 21, 1933, in Fairfield County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Eddison Rhymer and Alice Morgan Rhymer. She was the beloved wife of the late Boyd Herman “Bud” Spangler, Jr., with whom she shared 56 wonderful years of marriage.
Donna began her career working for the FBI before returning to Ohio to marry Bud and begin their life together. Throughout the years, she embraced many roles, working as a secretary, hanging wallpaper, and helping Bud build houses. However, the role she treasured most was that of wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, dedicating herself to raising and nurturing her family.
Donna and Bud enjoyed a life filled with adventure, traveling extensively and living in several states throughout the years. She found joy in traveling, square dancing, gardening, painting, crafting, and doing puzzles. A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Shallowford Christian Church, Donna lived a life rooted in faith, service, and family. She especially cherished watching her family grow and delighted in welcoming each new generation into her circle of love.
In addition to her parents, Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, and her daughter, Deborah Deare.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughters, Pam Chaney and husband Doug, and Becky Terrell; her son-in-law, John Deare; her grandchildren, Sarah and Aaron Royster, Amanda and Sean Ray, Jessica Deare, and Emily and Karac Spangler, Jacob Chaney, Debi Ann Chaney, and Daniell and Chris Daniels; her great-grandchildren, Madelyn Royster, McKinley Royster, Rory Spangler, Chloe Chaney-Mitchell, Lee Daniels, Cheyenne and Jake Kessler, Hunter Daniels, Lilly Daniels, and Remi Staley; and her cherished great-great-granddaughters, twin sisters Mila and Mira Mitchell.
A celebration of Donna’s life will be held at Shallowford Christian Church on July 12, 2026, at 2 pm with a gathering following in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to AuthoraCare Collective (Hospice of Alamance-Caswell), 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
