Early in the morning on Sunday, July 22, Dorothy "Dot" Foster Stanfield peacefully left her earthly home to join her husband Bill in heaven. Daughter of Lonzie Edmon and Myrtle Dodson Foster, Dot was born on October 28, 1924 in Alamance County. In 1942 Dot was married to William "Bill" Alexander Stanfield from Prospect Hill, NC. Dot and Bill were owners and operators of Cannon Store, a country grocery store in Ossipee. Married for over sixty years, Dot was an immaculate housekeeper and talented southern cook, famous for her red and green Christmas cake. She enjoyed traveling over the United States with Bill, often accompanied by family members or friends. Always meticulously and stylishly dressed with a flair for sharp, tasteful lines, vivid colors and "snazzy" shoes, Dot was the perfect sales clerk at Sellars Department Store in Burlington for many years after she and Bill retired from their grocery store business. Dot was far from a bystander in life. An active member of Bethlehem Christian Church, she frequently transported friends and neighbors unable to drive to doctor or hair appointments or to shop. Always willing to assist others whenever able, she truly enjoyed thoughtfully sharing in the lives of those around her. Respectfully frank and outspoken, Dot was not intimidated by calling her congressmen to express opinions and concerns. "Aunt Dot" was spoken with much love, admiration and affection by Dot's numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Aunt Dot was "fun" and welcoming and displayed genuine interest in their lives. Dot's cheerful nature and enthusiasm for life will be greatly missed. Dot is survived by her nephews, Robert B. Foster, Jr., Harry Stanfield, Ronnie Stanfield, Earl M. Stanfield, Jr., Gene Stanfield and Randy Murphy; nieces, Dr. Sharon Hinson, Helen Stanfield Alford, Patricia Stanfield Jones, Ann Stanfield Simmons, Linda Stanfield Kilgariff, Betty Murphy Ives, Mary Willie Stanfield Clayton, Bonnie Murphy Hiner, Evelyn Stanfield Strader and Cheryl Stanfield Hamlet and many other great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, Bruce Foster and Jack Foster and a nephew, Bobby Stanfield. A service to celebrate Dot's life will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum by Rev. Dave Gilbert. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. The family would like to express special thanks to all of Dot's caregivers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Christian Church, 3625 Altamahaw Church St., Elon, NC 27244.
