Edmund William “Bill” Thomas, a loving father, cherished pawpaw, and a dear friend, left this world on June 30, 2026. Bill lived life to the fullest, embracing every moment with a spirit that inspired those around him. Born with a zest for adventure, Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. In his early days, he shared many joyful moments playing roller hockey, a passion that showcased his competitive spirit. His love for Beach music led him to the dance floor at Fat Harold’s in North Myrtle Beach, where he spent countless weekends shagging and creating memories with friends and family. An avid NASCAR fan, Bill eagerly attended opening races in Daytona, passionately cheering for his favorite drivers—Bill Elliott and later, Chase Elliott. Bill loved his “toys”, especially his Jeep that he spent many hours driving at home and at the beach.
Professionally, Bill dedicated over 45 years to wholesale optical industry, starting at Piedmont Optical and culminating with Essilorluxottica. Specializing in designing hundreds of labs across the world, he was a known leader in CAD drawings and became a well-respected and consulted professional to many leaders across the lab industry. Bill led a road team for many years that brought his creations into reality. His vast and well-rounded knowledge of the industry goes unmatched to this day. He was recognized with many achievement awards. His commitment and dedication not only contributed to the success of his career but also left a lasting impact on those he worked with.
A proud charter member of Holly Hill Baptist Church, Bill’s faith was an important part of his life. He enjoyed helping others, often lending a hand to “fix” things, and cherished the camaraderie found in the men’s group breakfast gatherings. Bill enjoyed being a greeter as people came to services at the church and hanging out with the Never Grow Old crew.
Bill is survived by his beloved daughter, Tara Thomas Fierle (Kevin) of Kernersville, and his adored grandchildren, Nora and Lukas Fierle. He is also survived by his siblings: Ed Thomas of Winston Salem, Terry Thomas (Sandy) of Graham, Joe Thomas of Charlotte, and Tammy Karnes (Jeff) of Graham. He has numerous nieces and nephews.
The family expresses deep gratitude to all the friends and caregivers who walked alongside us during this journey. Special thanks to Joey and Karri Hall, Mike Lake, Alfie Roberts, the staff at Life at Home, and Marilyn at the Hospice House for their compassionate care.
