Eleanor Estelle Boyd Wright, Ph.D., aged 87, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, leaving behind a profound legacy of devotion to her family, an inspiring 51-year career in higher education, and an enduring warmth felt by all who knew her. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, George Philip Wright (Phil), to whom she was married for 53 wonderful years until his passing in May 2025.
Born in Livingston County, New York, Eleanor moved to North Carolina early in life, first in the Sandhills area, and eventually moving to Greensboro in the fourth grade, establishing a lifelong connection to the state. A passionate learner throughout her life, she pursued her education across several institutions, beginning her studies at Mars Hill College in 1956, continuing to Greensboro College, and SUNY Geneseo, before ultimately earning her Ph.D. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983. Eleanor dedicated her professional life to advocating for others, beginning her career by teaching, and advocating for, special needs students in the Guilford County Public School system in 1960. In 1973, she joined the Watson College of Education at UNCW, where she spent nearly four decades specializing in special education and training the next generations of teachers. By the time she fully retired in 2011, she had served with distinction as an associate professor, department chair, and associate dean. In 2006, her fierce advocacy for children and exceptional contributions to public service were officially recognized when UNCW honored her with the prestigious Razor Walker Award.
Beyond her remarkable professional achievements, Eleanor was a woman of vibrant and diverse interests. She possessed an adventurous spirit and a great fondness for travel, exploring the world from Ireland and Scotland, to the opposite ends of the earth in Australia and New Zealand, and many parts in between. When at home, she found immense joy in the quiet beauty of nature, spending hours bird watching and sharing her home with her beloved cats, both real and artistic. Her deep curiosity also extended to the past; she was a passionate student of genealogy, meticulously tracing her family’s roots and preserving their history for future generations.
Above all, Eleanor’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Crystal Wright; and her cherished grandchildren, grandsons Roman and Jackson, and Jackson’s partner Casey Atherton; all of whom live in the RDU, NC area. Her family, friends, and the countless educators she mentored will forever remember her intellect, her stories, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life.
A private family service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to support the scholarship Eleanor and Phil proudly funded to assist future educators. Contributions can be made online via the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s giving portal at Make a Gift to Dr. Eleanor Boyd Wright Scholarship In Special Education.
