Elizabeth Hilliard passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, four days shy of her 100th birthday.
She was born in 1926 in Amherst, Virginia to the late James David Mahone and the late Annie May Spivey Mahone. She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Elder Vernon N. Hilliard Sr., who passed in 1982; her son, James “Jimmy” R. Hilliard; her brother, James G. Mahone; a grandson, Robbie Hilliard; and a great grandson, William Weeks.
Mrs. Hilliard is survived by her son, Vernon N. Hilliard, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Debbie R. Hilliard (Jimmy); four grandchildren, Dwayne Hilliard (Rene), Angela Weeks (Weldon), Richie Hilliard (Lori) and Sonya Hilliard Shelton (Brian); several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as a niece and nephew.
Elizabeth was a hard worker with a fierce and determined spirit. She faced life with strength and courage, but beneath that strength was a heart full of love and compassion. Her family was one of the greatest joys of her life and she treasured every moment she spent with the people she loved. She had a special love for the simple things that made life beautiful. Her favorite color was pink and she enjoyed working in the garden and with her flowers.
She will continue to live on in the stories we tell, the memories we cherish, the family she helped build and the generations that came after her.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, September 21, 2026 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Don Carter. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the staff of AuthoraCare Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Mrs. Hilliard during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Andrews Memorial Baptist Church c/o the Camp Fund, 301 W. Elm St, Graham, NC 27253.
