Ervin "Bud" Durham, Jr., 93, of Burlington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026. Born on March 14, 1933, in Alamance County, North Carolina, Bud lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to his faith, family, and community.
Bud earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Elon University before embarking on a successful career as a salesman. He worked for many years in the industry, with his longest tenure at Hanes Hosiery. After retiring in 1992, Bud continued to serve others by working at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory for over 25 years. His outgoing personality and love for people made him a natural fit for both professions.
A man of deep faith, Christianity was the cornerstone of Bud's life. He was an ordained Baptist deacon and a devoted member of Holly Hill Baptist Church. Over the years, he sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School classes, and served as a guest speaker at various churches. Bud’s commitment to his faith extended beyond his local congregation; he was instrumental in the founding of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge and served as a longtime board member for the organization.
Bud’s love for sports was evident to all who knew him. He enjoyed watching his favorite teams—the Duke Blue Devils, Atlanta Braves, Carolina Panthers, and Charlotte Hornets—and spent many happy hours on the golf course. In addition to sports, Bud had a creative side and expressed himself through poetry writing. He was a lifelong dog owner and blessed by many beloved pets.
Above all else, Bud cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Bonnie "Pat" McIntyre Durham; his daughter Beth Durham Teachey and her husband Tim Teachey III; granddaughter Sarah Teachey and her husband Eric Cooper; grandson Benjamin Durham Teachey; and great-grandchildren Elijah E. Cooper, Finley C. Teachey, and Claire M. Teachey. He is also survived by his sister Margie Oliver; Sister-in-Law Doris M. Garrison, nieces Pam Gaither, Vicki Gaither Hall, Linda M. Hornaday, Glenda M. Spruill, Paula M. Hensley, Anna McIntyre, Patti McIntyre; bonus niece Denise Westmoreland (Duffy); nephews David Gaither, Garry Garrison, Blake Garrison, Don McIntyre; as well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Bud was predeceased by his parents Ervin O. Durham Sr. and Delores G. Durham; sister Reita Durham Gaither; and nephews Ron Oliver, Tim Oliver, and Jay Garrison.
Bud’s legacy extends far beyond his professional achievements or personal hobbies—he will be remembered for his warm sense of humor and unwavering kindness that touched everyone he met.
In honor of Bud’s memory and dedication to helping others through faith-based initiatives like Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge or Hospice Home that provide compassionate care during life’s most challenging moments—donations may be made directly towards these causes ensuring continuation impactful work aligned closely to values held dear throughout his lifetime journey serving God and humanity alike.
