Glenna Marie Barry Hensley, 86, born March 22, 1939 in Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on May 23, 2025, in the presence of her family at Alamance Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Hugh Hamilton Barry and the late Margaret Coffman Barry. Glenna was the wife of 67 years to David P. Hensley of the home.
She graduated from Altamahaw-Ossipee High School in 1957 and worked in local textiles until she was married on July 17, 1958. Shortly thereafter, she joined her husband at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. After her children were born she re-entered the workforce and was employed for fourteen years at Carolina Biological Supply Co. in the research and development department, and later was employed at Alamance Community College as a sewing and tailoring course instructor in the continuing education division, where she retired.
She was a “hands-on” very creative person who enjoyed making anything from crocheted garments, tree ornaments to afghans. She was a professional seamstress and was often called upon to design, sew, and alter all types of clothing including wedding attire and dance costumes for Elite Feet, Fabulous Feet and Company Shops clogging teams. She was a fabulous cook and baker and took pride in teaching her children and grandchildren her skills and secret recipes. She was blessed with a green thumb for growing many beautiful flowers and raising vegetable gardens, from which she used for home canning and preserving for others to enjoy throughout the years. Along side her husband she volunteered and delivered Meals On Wheels of Alamance County.
Other than her husband of the home, she is survived by her daughter, Beverly Hensley Huffines and her husband Ken; her son, Tony Hensley and his wife Anna; her grandchildren, Casey Hensley Johnson and her husband Todd; Jesse Hensley and fiancée Ashleigh Ziegler; Abbey Huffines and fiancée Graham Moore; her sister, Patsy Barry Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Gene Barry; and a sister, Eileen Barry Morgan.
A service to honor her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 26, at Bethel Christian Church in Caswell County, officiated by Rev. Craig Cox and Rev. Caleb Hensley, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service, and at other times at the home.
