Burlington Herbert Cornelius Braun, Sr., age 92, of Twin Lakes died at his home on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 with family by his side. He was a native of Weehawken, New Jersey and was married for 65 years to Julia Curtin Braun who preceded him in death in 2007. Herb graduated from Union Hill High School and Stevens Institute of Technology. He joined the Naval Reserves in 1942. While there, he taught pre-radar to Naval Officers at Harvard. He was transferred to Pearl Harbor in 1945 to work on ship electronics. He was released from active duty in 1945 and continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until 1978 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He worked for Bell Laboratories in Whippany, New Jersey and at the Western Electric and Guilford Center locations in North Carolina until his retirement in 1978. The family lived in Chapel Hill from 1956 to 1968 and then at Forest Oakes, Greensboro, before coming to Twin Lakes in 1992. Herb will be remembered for his devotion to his wife and family and his good sense of humor. He enjoyed a full life participating in many activities and was a friend to all. Survivors include daughter, Gail Patricia Braun of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law, Herbert C. "Neil" Braun, Jr. and his wife Chris, of Burlington; and one granddaughter, Amanda Braun Badger. A graveside service will be held on Friday July 11, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Alamance Memorial Park by Reverend Bernie Hess. The family will receive friends at the Home of Herbert C. "Neil" Braun, Jr., 2165 Woodland Avenue, in Burlington. The family wants to express their appreciation to Linda Curl and the staff of hospice, who cared first for his wife and later for Herbert.
