Hilda Stainback Bryant, 92, passed away on June 19, 2025, in her Anderson, Caswell County, home surrounded by family and private caregivers, and under the care of hospice services, after years of complications from chronic kidney disease and dementia.
Hilda was born on March 24, 1933, to the late Walter Siddle Stainback and Mary Elizabeth Aldridge Stainback. She played basketball and was a cheerleader in high school, graduating from Anderson High School in 1951. She married Joseph Marshall Bryant on February 6, 1956, and they raised two children, Teresa Bryant Gentry (James) of Burlington, and Allen Dwayne Bryant (Tabby) of Anderson. She supported her family by being a homemaker, and also worked as a church custodian for The Caswell Ward and Roxboro Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Hilda was a lifelong dedicated member of the Caswell Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had many volunteer positions within her church throughout her lifetime of service in her faith.
Hilda enjoyed cooking, eating Zack’s Hotdogs, that needed to be “heavy with chili,” and drinking Dr. Pepper, or as she called it, “the best thing in the world.” In addition, she loved watching her favorite Major League Baseball team, the Atlanta Braves, and other college and professional baseball and basketball games with her husband for many years on TV. Somehow, she went from a N.C. State fan to Duke fan later in life.
Hilda loved her family, friends, and caregivers and showed it with her unique love language that manifested during the early stages of dementia by expressing love, and adding, “a bushel and peck, and a hug around the neck, I gotcha good.” Despite her kidney cancer diagnosis, followed by one kidney removed due to cancer, the death of her husband, chronic kidney disease, and dementia, Hilda’s had a strong Christian faith with a sweet, joyful, spirit until she was weakened by her chronic illnesses during her last days of mortality. Her presence and influence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Along with her parents’ death, Hilda is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Joseph, who passed in 2019; a sister, Gladys Apple; and four brothers, Willard, Hubert, Morris, and Ross Stainback.
Hilda is survived by her two children; Teresa Gentry (James) and Dwayne Bryant (Tabby); 6 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.
