James “Jim” Lawrence Brothers, 87, of Burlington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on April 7, 1938, in Burlington, NC, Jim was the son of the late James Love Brothers and Betty Ruth Overman Brothers. On June 1, 1957, he married the love of his life, Peggy Combs. Together they shared 68 wonderful years of marriage, devotion, and cherished memories.
Jim began his career as a postal worker, serving for nine years, before spending seven years with the West Bend Company, where he was known for his skill in sales and dedication to customers. He later founded his own business, Elite Home Products, where his hard work and entrepreneurial spirit flourished.
Service to others was central to Jim’s life. He was a devoted volunteer with Hospice for eight years, during which time he single-handedly raised more than $300,000 to support their mission. A man of deep faith, Jim served as a Sunday school teacher and active member of Alamance Lutheran Church, and later St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He also served his country in the U.S. Army until receiving a medical discharge. In addition, Jim was a proud Shriner and a member of Masonic Bula Lodge #409.
Jim found joy in the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, especially at his favorite spots in Canada—South Lake and Alligator Creek. Above all, he treasured time with his family and friends. Known for his warmth, friendliness, and gift of conversation, Jim truly never met a stranger.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy, and their children: Mike Brothers (Patty), Lisa Brothers Cheek (Barry), and Kara Brothers. He was a proud grandfather to Jennifer Brothers Weegar (Scott), Laura Brothers Holden (Brian), Lesleigh Ann Roberson (William), Brian Cheek (Casey), Nathan Cheek (Molly), Virginia Cheek, and Slater Cheek. His legacy lives on through his greatgrandchildren: Carter Weegar, Conner Weegar, Corbin Caulder, Adeline Caulder, Eleanor Holden, and Riley Cheek.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Betty Ruth Brothers; his sister, Jan Johnson; and his infant brother, Johnny and infant grandson Andrew Cheek.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2719 Bellmont-Alamance Road, Burlington, NC.
Jim will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his dedication to service, and his boundless love for family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
