James Roy Wheeler, Jr., 56, of Graham, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 14, 2025, surrounded by love.
Born January 31, 1969, in Chatham County, James was the son of the late James Wheeler, Sr. and Margaret Heath Johnson. He lived his life with quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people he loved.
James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he trained as an aircraft mechanic and later served on the Honor Guard—roles that reflected both his technical skill and his respect for service, discipline, and tradition. He carried that same pride and integrity into every part of his life.
An avid UNC Tar Heels fan and could always be counted on to know the score, the stats, and exactly what should have happened on the court or field. When he wasn’t watching a game, he was happiest near the water. James had a deep love for the beach, finding peace in the sound of the waves and relaxation at his camper. He also enjoyed traveling so much that he was determined to see a new destination every year, with the company of cherished loved ones.
Above all else, James was a family man. He was a husband, father, grandfather, and friend who showed his love through dependability, selflessness, and being present whenever he was needed. If you asked him, he would say his favorite title was Pop Pop and Grandpa James.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Ayers Wheeler; his children, Lindsey Wheeler Parks (Garrett), Thomas James Wheeler, Jennifer Bryant (Dan), and Cooper David Dail (Whitney); and his cherished grandchildren, Jackson Bryant, Macy Dail, Mia Dail, Carter Parks, Avery Parks, Noah Parks, Miller Dail, and Denver Parks. He is also survived by his siblings, Cliff Wheeler (Meloney) and Michelle Ferguson, along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Crystal Wheeler.
A celebration of James's life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, December 19, 2025 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9 - 10:45 AM prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Alamance Memorial Park.
James will be remembered for his steady presence, his loyalty to family and country, and the love of the simple moments—sun, sand, travel, and time spent with those he loved. But most of how he handled, through his determination and grit, the ever-changing obstacles.
