Obituary

Jean Cox Montgomery, 94, born on July 15, 1932, in Surry County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on May 8, 2026. She lived a life marked by dedication to her family, community, and passions, leaving a lasting imprint on all who knew her.

Jean devoted many years to working at Burlington Mills as well as owning and operating Dixie Restaurant and R-J Specialty Co. both in Hillsborough with her husband Raymond.

A woman of diverse interests, Jean loved politics and was notably present as a delegate at the 1980 Republican National Convention, underscoring her engagement and enthusiasm for the political landscape. She treasured her family deeply, took great joy in her church, and was known for her homemade crafts. Jean also had a vibrant social spirit and truly enjoyed engaging in conversations, which brought joy and connection to those around her.

Jean is survived by her daughter; Cyndee Eskridge and husband Harry; her daughter-in-law Michele Montgomery; and grandchildren Lisa Cook and husband Brian, Lynn Dunn and husband Bennett, Trey Eskridge, Ray Montgomery III, and Chloe Montgomery. Jean also leaves behind her brother, Quincy Cox, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years; Raymond Lewis Montgomery, Sr., her son; Raymond “Ray” Montgomery, Jr., parents; Quincy Monroe Cox and Ruth Hall Cox as well as siblings; Catherine Batts, Ann Sink, and William “Bill” Cox.

The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at AuthoraCare Hospice for making Jean’s last days better and more comfortable.

A Funeral service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 in the chapel at Lowe Funeral Home with the burial to follow at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, McLeansville, NC. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10-45 prior to the service at the funeral home.
