John Preston Moyers, 69, of Burlington, NC, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at his home while under hospice care. He was born in Michigan on January 23, 1956.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Angeline Moyers, and his father, Haskell Preston Moyers. He is survived by three sisters: Jill (Dennis), Janet (Kyle), Jani (Mark); brother, Jeff; spouse Pamela Jo (Catoe) Moyers; children Drew (Felicia) and Karis (Alex); grandson Preston; and several nieces and nephews.
John served in the US Air Force after high school and then became a pianist/singer for various musical groups and gospel quartets prior to moving to NC.
In 1985, John met Pam, the love of his life, during his group’s concert at Glen Raven Baptist Church. It was love at first sight as Pam leaned over in her pew and whispered to her mom, “I’m going to marry the piano player.” Seven months later, John moved from Memphis, TN, to Burlington, NC, and married Pam. Their beautiful love story spanned over 40 years.
John retired with the Burlington Fire Department in 2016 after 25 years of service as a Firefighter through Captain. He spent several years as a Fire Investigator/Inspector as well. John was also a Fire Service Instructor at Durham Technical Community College and the Fire Service Coordinator for Alamance Community College.
John had a passion for flying airplanes and obtained his pilot’s license in 1976. John worked as a flight instructor at Burlington Aviation as well as a Check Instrument Instructor at Elon Aviation, and founded Alamance Flight Training Center. For many years, on his days off from work, John assisted with search and rescue missions in the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the US Airforce. John continued to play piano and sing with Gospel Quartets for a majority of his life, most recently with Sheltered Quartet. John treasured spending time with his family – he was a beloved spouse, father, and grandfather. He also loved going for walks every day with his dog, Teddy.
The family would like to express special gratitude to Dr. Richard Morrow, John’s Neurologist who recently retired from UNC, for all of his compassionate care over the past 22 years. The final time they met, Dr. Morrow told John how much respect he had for him because John never complained about anything he endured during his long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Andy Clapp and Rev. Walter Allison. The family will receive friends from 4-5:45 prior to the service at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, a charity which aims to improve care for those affected by the disease and advance research for a cure (www.parkinson.org).
