John Dean Vaughn

November 22, 1957 — May 19, 2025

Burlington

John “Dean” Vaughn, 67, of Burlington, NC, passed away on May 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 22, 1957, in Burlington, NC, he was the beloved son of Betty May and the late Fred Vaughn.

Dean graduated from North Carolina State University and went on to enjoy careers with Piedmont Airlines, The Walt Disney Company, and Craig Specialty Company. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church. No matter where he worked, Dean was known for his laughter and the genuine warmth he brought to every room.

Dean’s greatest joy was his family, and he treasured every moment spent together—whether cheering on his children at performances, relaxing at Smith Mountain Lake or the beach, exploring Walt Disney World, or taking in a concert or show. For Dean, it never mattered what they were doing, as long as they were together.

Dean had a remarkable gift for making friends wherever he went. With a joke always at the ready and a helping hand extended to anyone in need, he made everyone feel welcome and valued. His kindness and humor brightened the lives of all who knew him, and his stories and laughter will be deeply missed.

Dean is survived by his devoted wife, Valerie Vaughn, his beloved children, Meredith Vaughn and her husband, Dustin Cranford, and Cameron Vaughn. As well as his sister, Michelle Lowe and her husband Jack Lowe. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Vaughn; his stepfather, Craig “Dobby” May; his brother, Thomas Vaughn; and the family’s loyal dog, Nessa.

A celebration of Dean’s life will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 31, at First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, NC. Visitation will begin at 10am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“Rest easy, Dean. We’ll see you when the fireworks start.”
