Johnny David Williams, 86, of Haw River passed away the morning of September 7, 2026 at UNC Medical Center Hillsborough following a brief illness.
Born in Muscogee, Georgia, Johnny was one of ten children of the late Willie Melford Williams and Gladys Irene Wheliss Williams. He was married for more than 40 years to his beloved wife, Velma Haithcock Williams, who survives.
Johnny made a living as a Highway Maintenance Supervisor with the NC Department of Transportation, but he made a life with his family. His daughter, Selena Williams, was blessed with four daughters of her own, Heather Wilson, Paige Jeffries, Hailea Morrison, and Harlea Clifton. In addition to his grandchildren, Johnny and Velma enjoyed nine great-grandchildren, and Johnny made a point to document all of the special family events with his video camera, and his family enjoys watching those tapes to this day.
A real lover of the outdoors, Johnny enjoyed mountain vacations, camping, boating, and chasing monster catfish. He also loved cars – classic cars, race cars, any cars – and was always tinkering with some kind of project. A true handyman, the family knew, “if it breaks down, call Paw Paw.”
Not one to sit idle after retiring from NCDOT, Johnny became a bus driver for Elon University and was recognized by the school for his dedicated service. He will be remembered for his love of family, his giving spirit, and his appreciation for the outdoors.
In addition to his wife, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Johnny is survived by brothers Lonnie, Danny, Kenny Wayne, William, and Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Donna Sue, Florine, and Silver Dean, and brother Richard.
The family will hold a private service at a later date. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
