Joyce Jones Roorback

Joyce Katherine Jones Roorback, 93, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Coble Creek Health and Rehab at Twin Lakes in Burlington, NC. A native of Thomasville, NC, she was born on March 21, 1932, to the late Grover Lewis Jones and Emma Lou Conner Jones, and was married for over fifty-nine years to the late James Frederick Roorback who passed in 2013.

Joyce and Jim started their married life and their family in Pennsylvania before making North Carolina their home. Wherever they lived they made lifelong friendships. Joyce was a devoted homemaker raising her five children. Her faith was her guiding light, and she took great comfort in her daily bible study, prayer group and choir. She was in her happy place singing traditional hymns with her daughters and granddaughters. Joyce was reserved by nature but blessed with a wry wit and contagious smile. Her competitive spirit surfaced when playing board games, ring toss and horseshoes. Later in her retirement years, she learned to swim, and swam competitively with her community center friends, cheered on by her grandchildren. Joyce loved visiting with friends and extended family. In recent years, she enjoyed new friendships and her sister’s companionship at the Friendship Adult Day Center. The loving attention of the staff was such a blessing.

Joyce is survived by her children: Julie Woody (Robin), Fred Roorback (Annie), Patty Wooddell (Scott) and Laurie Converse (Matthew); Grandchildren: Jill Fine (Chris), Jodie Hart (Dave), Emily Stainback (Justin), Matthew Woody (Jennie), Alyssa Legg (Jayson) Jason Comer (Brittany), Alex Roorback, Eric Roorback, Dillon Jones, Patrick Jones (Erica), Ryan Poston (Jason), Cameron Francis (Nick), Grier Wooddell; Great grandchildren: Garrett, Addie, and Elliot, Ella and Evy; Claire, Tyler and Daniel; Adrianna and Samuel; Aurora, Oryn, Layla, Audrey, Ben and Annabelle; Rylee, Raegan, George, Owen and Miles. Joyce is also survived by her sister, Wilma Haynes, and her brother, David Jones (Patti).

Joyce is now reunited with her husband, James Frederick Roorback, her son, Robert James Roorback, and her brother, Jerry Conner Jones in eternal rest. The family is planning a celebration of Joyce’s life to be announced at a later date.
