Obituary

Laura Gaynell Ward Hewitt Harville, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on August 1, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on September 17, 1940, in Cumberland County North Carolina, to the late David and Nellie Ward.

Throughout her life, Gaynell was drawn to the beauty of the outdoors. She found happiness in fishing and boating, delighting in countless moments by the beach and lake where laughter echoed and lasting memories were made. Her hands were always busy—whether piecing together puzzles or immersed in a good book.

Gaynell’s warmth and vivacious charm accompanied her everywhere she went, from busy shopping mall trips—often the highlights of gatherings with loved ones—to heartfelt afternoons spent playing with her cherished poodles. These little companions, along with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, brought her tremendous joy. Gaynell was also a long-time member of True Gospel Baptist Church in Pelhem, NC.

She is survived by daughters; Barbara Hewitt Leigh and Dana Hewitt (Bradley Barber), grandchildren; Kristin Myers (Ryan), Fallon Leigh, Bryan Leigh, and David Leigh. Her legacy is further cherished by her great-grandchildren; Morgan Leigh, Josiah Leigh, Jackson Justice, Aayden Leigh, Stephen Myers, Layla Ricardez, Taylor Leigh, Lilly Smith, Chloe Smith, and Chase Leigh, great great granddaughter; Avianna Leigh, sisters, Linda Rainey, Janet Roberts, and Pamela Faircloth, a brother; David Ward as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.

Gaynell was preceded in death by her beloved son; Jeff Hewitt, father; David Ward, her mother Nellie Ward, daughter-in-law; Robin Hewitt, son-in-law; Allen Leigh, sister Joan Strader, and her brother Carroll Ward.

A graveside service to celebrate Gaynell’s life will be held at 4:00 in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Magnolia Cemetery in Elon by Rev. Cliff Wilson.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice Authoracare for the kind and compassionate care of Gaynell the last few months.
