Lena Smith

Lena Grace Hamlet Smith, 88, of 907 E. Haggard Ave. passed away Monday, April 18, 2011 at the Hospice Home. Mrs. Smith was born April 14, 1923 in Caswell County to the late Willie Hamlet and Sarah Fuqua Hamlet. Lena was married to the late Charlie Jackson C.J. Smith, Sr. who preceded her. She was the owner and operator of the Handy Corner and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Lane and her husband, N. Wallace Lane of Burlington; two sons, Charlie J. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Burlington, and Wayne Smith and his wife, Jean of Haw River; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Ferguson of Durham; and special friends, Wayne and Maxine Payne of Burlington. Lena was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter, Rosa Marie Smith Von Ingelheim; six brothers, and two sisters. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Pegg officiating. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home of her daughter, 1346 Greenwood Dr. Burlington.
