It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of a true American hero, Leslie (Skip), a Vietnam veteran who selflessly served his country with honor, courage, and unwavering dedication. Leslie (Skip) passed away on October 27, 2023 at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of valor that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Skip was born on December 10, 1947, in New York. He joined the United States Marines in 1967 and soon found himself on the front lines of the Vietnam War as a Rifleman 0311. Throughout his service, Skip demonstrated remarkable bravery in the face of unimaginable challenges, proving himself as a symbol of resilience and selflessness. During his service, he received a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ device and Vietnamese Service Metal.

After his service, he soon moved to Mexico New York until he retired from Alcan. Skip could be found hunting fishing with his brothers, family and friends or at Wade’s Diner in Oswego for breakfast. He later moved to Tennessee to be closer to his son Jason and family, where he stayed for many years before moving to North Carolina. During this time, you could find him at karaoke listening to the music and dancing his nights away with Kathy. Ones that knew him best knew his history through his memories he would share to all that would listen.

Leslie (Skip) is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy Halbert (Thayer), his children, James Halbert, Christopher Halbert, his sisters, Marcita (Clyde) Hall, Marta Guarjardo and his many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Alice Halbert. He was preceded by his parents, Cleota and Leslie Halbert Sr., his brother, Frederick Halbert Sr, his sister and brother-in-law Patricia and Richard Phillip, his daughter Leslie James and sons Jason Birchard and Timothy Ladd.

A viewing will be from 2:00-3:00PM followed by a memorial service to celebrate Leslie’s (Skip's) life on Friday November 3, 2023 at 3PM at Lycoming United Methodist Church in Lycoming, NY. The graveside service will follow at North Scriba Cemetery with military honors. There will be a gathering for family and friends at 4PM following the graveside service at the VFW Post in Hastings, NY.
