Linda Dora Acevedo, 80, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Manhattan, New York, on December 4, 1944 to the late Harold Meyer and Else Scheffler Meyer. She was married for over 53 years to Lawrence Acevedo, who passed away in December 2021. Survivors include her children, Liana Napier and husband, Jason, Loreen Pais and husband, Matt; grandchildren, Mia Napier, Lyla Napier and Colton Pais.
Linda was an intelligent, brave, independent, and selfless woman. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California in Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in social work from Hunter College in Manhattan. She spent her career dedicated to providing social services to those who were underprivileged and underserved in New York City. In 1980, she moved to Westchester County N.Y. and was the director of several programs to assist Senior Citizens and Adults with Disabilities. The Acevedo’s spent 3 years living in Mexico City when her husbandwas transferred with his government job. There, Linda worked with the newcomers club helping wives and families adjust to living in a new country and was also employed by the American Embassy as a counselor.
While Linda worked full-time, she was always there for her family. Her two daughters- Liana and Loreen made sure she was taken care of after their father passed away and as herHuntington’s Disease progressed. They describe Linda as a faithful woman, a loving motherand loyal friend, proud of her German heritage, who raised them to be independent, compassionate, non judgmental, and kind women. Her advice was always genuine and she always had their best interest at heart.
A lover of sunshine and warm weather- she could always be found sitting on the front porch. She delighted in long days at the beach, was always devouring a book, baked delicious cheese cakes, was a devoted fan of General Hospital, enjoyed her international travels, was fluent in German, and could be found dancing to the BeeGees or Earth Wind and Fire with her husband. She was fond of going to plays and musical concerts and found great pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren.
The family asks that donations be made on HDreach.org, an organization which funds research for Huntington’s Disease, a rare genetic condition that has afflicted her, her sister and other family members.
