Luther Edward Smith, 86, of Burlington went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 31, 2025, after a brief stay at hospice.
He was born on April 4, 1939, in Alamance County. Luther graduated from A-O High School and took some higher education courses before enrolling in the Army, where he proudly served his country. After his service, he embarked on a 39-year career with Burlington Industries Transportation Division where he served as Fleet Maintenance Manager. Luther was an active member of Bethlehem Christian Church. His role as a deacon and trustee was very important to him.
Upon retirement, Luther enjoyed taking day trips to the mountains or picking peaches in the Sandhills with Brenda, but his favorite past time was spending time with his three grandsons in whatever capacity he could. From taking them on trips, to eating at Zack’s, to watching them play sports, he was truly their biggest fan. His sense of humor and quick wit was always at its peak when he was around them, and that trait was still prevalent in his final days.
His survivors include his wife of 63 years, Brenda Moore Smith, daughter Amy Smith Simmons (Mark), son Matthew William Smith (Michelle), grandsons Bryce Nathaniel Simmons (Madison), Harrison William Smith (Elle), Hunter Michael Smith, great-grandson Hudson Roy Simmons, bonus granddaughter Brittany Gerringer (Brian), bonus great-granddaughter Aubrey Gerringer, a special brother-in-law Charles Moore, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Luther was preceded in death by his parents Terry Mac Smith and Maggie Beckom Smith, and his siblings Allen Smith, Ross Smith, JC Smith, Dan Smith, Pete Smith, Mac Smith Ross, Margaret Todd, Betsy Albright, Mary Jane Pettigrew, and Mildred Madren.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staffs at Cone Hospital and AuthoraCare Collective Hospice of Burlington. Also, the family is very grateful for all the thoughts and prayers sent their way during this time.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Bethlehem Christian Church located at 3003 Altamahaw Racetrack Rd, Elon, NC 27244. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00pm – 1:45pm, and a service will follow at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to AuthoraCare Collective Hospice Home of Burlington located at 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215.
