Madge Murray Mounger, born December 23, 1939, in Newport, Tennessee, lived a life defined by generosity, faith, and devotion to family. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love she so freely gave to others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Chevis Murray and Myra Mims Murray, and her sister, Mary Pauline Murray.

Madge shared 62 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Charles D. Mounger, Jr. Together they built a family she treasured deeply. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Mary Katherine (Wilfred) Kraushaar, Margaret (Allen) Hughes, Charles Daniel “Dan” (Tiffani Wiles-Mounger) Mounger III, and Laura (Jason) Evans. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Robin (Scottie), Ashley (Douglas), James, Eli (Kaitlyn), Laura (Zac), Addison (Anthony), Wyatt, and Marley—and many great- grandchildren.

A proud graduate of the University of Tennessee, Madge studied Home Economics with a focus on textiles and clothing—skills she would carry throughout her life. Whether sewing, knitting, or teaching, she found joy in creating and sharing. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, the Ossoli Circle of Knoxville, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Madge’s career included time at Georgia Power and later meaningful work with the Tennessee Welfare Department, helping foster and adoptive families. Her most important role, however, was raising her children. Later, she returned to teaching and shared her passion for homemaking skills through adult education.

Her faith was central to her life. She was an active member of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church and Lenoir City Presbyterian Church before moving to North Carolina, where she became part of the Joy Bible Study at Glen Hope Baptist Church.

Madge’s servant heart reached far beyond her home. She devoted countless hours to making clothing and necessities for hundreds of children in need around the world, supporting ministries such as Samaritan’s Purse and Operation Christmas Child, sharing the love of Jesus through every stitch.

She loved welcoming others into her home, often sharing meals, laughter, and her latest handmade creations. Her warmth, kindness, and steady presence will be deeply missed.

The family is especially grateful to David, Sherri, and Ana Williams for their devoted care, as well as Dawn and the team at WellCare Home Health for their compassion.

A service will be held in Tennessee at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse in her memory.
