Marion Marshall Cheek Jr., lovingly known as “Rusty,” passed away on December 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and quiet compassion. Born on September 18, 1934, in Fork, Maryland, Rusty grew into a man defined by honor, resilience, and a deep devotion to family.
A proud United States Marine Corps Sergeant, Rusty served his country with dignity and unwavering commitment. His years in the Marine Corps shaped the integrity and steadfastness that guided him throughout his life.
Rusty was a devoted father, cherishing every moment spent with his wife and two daughters, Tracie Barefoot and Jamie Thomas, who were the great joys of his life. He also leaves behind his beloved sisters, Lola Calhoun and Lynn Cheek; Granddaughter, Karly Headen (Husband Josh Headen); and great granddaughters, Eden and Violet Headen who hold his memory dearly.
Rusty now rejoins his loved ones who have gone before him: his father, Marion Marshall Cheek Sr.; his mother, Lillian Snyder Cheek; his beloved wife of 61 years, Geraldine Kollar Cheek; his grandson, Casey Marshall Thomas; and infant son RJ Cheek. The reunion of these cherished souls brings comfort to those who mourn his passing.
Those who knew Rusty remember him for his steadfast loyalty, his passion to provide, and the warmth and good cooking he brought to every gathering. His strength was quiet but unshakable, and his presence offered reassurance to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Rusty’s life stands as a testament to service—both to his country and to the people he loved. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy endures in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
May he rest in eternal peace.
Rusty’s family would like to an extend a giant thank you to the healthcare workers at Authoracare Hospice of Greensboro for the amazing care they provided and for making his transition home as comfortable as possible.
