Mary Loyd Beck

Mary Loyd Beck, 78, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 16, 2026, surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was born on January 17th, 1948, in Halifax VA, to the late Thomas Hausen Wilborn and Mary Loyd Wilborn.

Mary dedicated much of her professional life to the manufacturing industry, retiring from Child Nutrition after a long and fulfilling career at Western Alamance High School as a lunch lady where she loved all the kids.

Moments of togetherness were cherished as she loved nothing more than spending quality time with her family. Her warmth and nurturing nature made her a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Family meant the world to Mary, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the sparkle in her eyes, her proudest accomplishments and the heart of her legacy.

Mary was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Graham NC. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life that shaped her caring and loving nature.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years Letcher Beck, children, Dwight Poteat, David Poteat (Deb), Letcher Beck Jr, and Kimber Carroll. Her legacy continues through her 15 grandchildren, her 15 great grandchildren that she adored; her sisters, Wanda Jarrett, Nancy Smith (James), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who will all miss her dearly.

Mary has now been reunited with her parents, her daughter Susan Marie Poteat, her brothers Thomas Green Wilborn, Walter Edward Wilborn, John Robert Wilborn, Earnest Eugene Wilborn, Charlie Philip Wilborn, Laurence Wayne Wilborn, William Lacy Wilborn, and Linnis Wilborn. Her sisters Shirley Mae Wilborn, Anne Wilborn, and Lottie Wilborn, and a great grandchild Noah Parker Poteat.

Her loving stories will echo through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, forever reminding them of the light she brought into their lives. In their cherished memories, she will continue to live on, her spirit as vibrant as ever — a comforting presence that will warm their hearts.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Moses Cone nurses and staff for all their compassion, loving care and support that was shown to their mother and to their family during Mary’s illness.

Visitation will be held at Lowe Funeral Home Saturday June 20th from 4-6 pm, the celebration of life will be held Sunday June 21st from 2-2:45 with a graveside service to follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
