Mary “Sue” Dunn, 86, passed away in her sleep at Brookdale Burlington June 25th, 2025 after a long battle with coronary disease and more recently, dementia. Known by all as “Sue”, she had been a resident of High Point, NC for the past 24 years.
Sue was born in Bula, Texas on April 8th, 1939 to Venda and John Robertson, the youngest of four daughters. The family moved to a small farm outside Hale Center, Texas where Sue, with her competitive nature, excelled as a star basketball player winning a championship for her local high school. She married James H. Dunn III shortly after high school and the young couple began farming in Palmer County. Her son, Tony Kirk was born in 1963 in Friona, Texas and son Roger Scott was born in Portland, Oregon in 1967.
Like her mother, Sue was known for her exceptional sense of style and a unique gift for interior design. She moved to Dallas shortly after her divorce in 1971 and began her long career in the home furnishings business, shining as a top salesperson. At the urging of close friend and Tuesday Morning founder, Lloyd Ross, she opened Sofas By Design in Falls Church, Virginia in 1988 and had a very successful business for the next 13 years until she decided to retire to High Point in 2001.
Her gardens were beautiful, and she would light up entertaining a full house of friends and family. Her Christmas tree was something to see that she looked forward to decorating every year. She had a wide circle of friends who adored her and loved her charming sense of humor – there was always a joke in her pocket to share. Sue sincerely believed that to have a good friend, you had to be a good friend. Her faith carried her through many struggles, but she always trusted that everything worked out for the best.
Sue is preceded in death by her youngest son, Scott, who died in 1991, her oldest sister, Johnny Mae Rhodes, who passed in 2001 and Johnny Mae’s youngest son, Ricky Lynn, who passed in 2017. Sue is survived by her son, Tony and daughter-in-law Jill, who reside near Saxapahaw, NC, and two sisters, Shire Anderson and Jane Drake, both residing in Texas. In addition, she is survived by her beloved nieces, Denese Rhodes, Kayla Wallace, Cindy Nickell and nephews, Darren and Derek Drake.
Sue shared a very special life-long relationship with her best friend, Beth Chandler and her beloved family, husband James, daughters Amy Powell and Jamy Brase, and son, Bryan Chandler, all residing in Indianapolis.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the exceptional staff at Brookdale Burlington Memory Care and AuthoraCare of Burlington.
