Matthew Mitchell Boss

January 21, 1957 — June 30, 2023

Raleigh

Matthew Mitchell Boss was born January 21, 1957 in Grand Rapids, MI to father, Mitchell Melvin Boss and mother, Annette Landstra Boss. Matthew passed away unexpectedly on June 30,2023, at Alamance Regional Hospital in Burlington, NC, of heart complications. He was 66 years old and in otherwise great health.

He is survived by his mother Annette L. Boss, of Burlington, NC, his brother Mark Boss (64), of Sarasota, FL, his 3 children, Breana Dean Boss(39), of Raleigh, NC,  Brooke Nicole Boss(38), of Raleigh,NC and Orrie Austin Boss(34), of Charleston SC and 7 grandchildren.

His father, Mitchell was a furniture designer and growing up they lived in Atlanta, GA, Hickory and High Point, NC and Martinsville, VA. In 1972, the family moved to Sarasota, FL to live on a 57ft double-planked mahogany cruiser that was originally built for Al Capone. They enjoyed living there for 5 years.

Matthew was a happy child and well-liked by all. He enjoyed anything with wheels- bicycles, motorcycles and cars.  His first job was working as a mechanic and he worked on his dad’s boat. After moving back to NC in 1977, he attended Surry Community College for 2 years earning his Associates degree. He served as student body president. From there, Matthew went to NC State University (80-83) receiving his bachelors  degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He met his ex wife , mother of his children at that time and took his first job in Greensboro, NC.  Matthew was known for his exceptional work ethic. He had a successful career both working as sales engineer at Hoffman & Hoffman, and later at LR Gorrell in Raleigh, NC as sales manager.

Though jokingly labeled as a “work-a-holic” by his children, Matthew managed to be an amazing dedicated father. He took time to be a huge part of all of their extra curricular activities, including basketball, swimming, gymnastics , scouts, etc. , and even took on the role of coach for a few soccer seasons. Matthew also developed an interest in real estate and acquired several “fixer-upper” properties, which he later turned into rentals. He involved the whole family in the process, turning his kids into painters, landscapers, and cleaners at an early age !

Throughout the years, Matthew earned Title P.E. , Licensed Professional Engineer, as well as CEM, certified Energy Manager, and LEED, Green Building associate. In 2016, Matthew finally had the opportunity to pursue his goal of owning his own company, and opened Air Worx Equipment LLC. , as President, P.E., CEM , with great success. Alongside Matthew, his longtime girlfriend, Ginger Scoggins, Cary, NC, enjoyed traveling the world together. A mutual love for staying physically fit and active made his love for swimming, biking, hiking, and the outdoors even more special.

Matthew cared about his family, working hard, people, politics, and was deeply concerned for environmental issues such as global warming and reducing our carbon footprint.  He was adored and immensely admired  by his children who constantly sought out his advice and wisdom, and who thought of him as not just “dad”, but as their friend and their Hero.

He will be missed by all, but the memories shared with him, lessons taught by him, and greatness witnessed by everyone who knew him and will forever live on our hearts.
