Matthew Gregory Williamson

July 21, 1987 — August 1, 2023

Graham

Matthew Gregory Williamson, 36, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at Duke University Hospital surrounded by his family. Matthew was born on July 21, 1987 in Alamance County to Reverend Gregory Allen Williamson and Brenda Stutts Williamson who both survive. He was the husband of Angela Willis Williamson of the home for ten years.

At age 15, he was diagnosed with Stage 3B Hodgkins Lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and two bone marrow transplants over the course of his high school and college career. Despite these challenges, Matthew graduated from Southern Alamance High School in 2005 and was a trumpet player in the Patriot Pride Marching Band and the Jazz Ensemble. He also completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Minor in Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Matthew was a Registered Nurse at Duke University Hospital and worked in the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit where he was a former patient. Matthew then became a research nurse coordinator for the Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program. During this time, his lungs started failing due to complications from prior cancer therapies. With much prayer and support from communities across the states, he received a double lung transplant in 2017. He went on to lead an active life and pursued his calling in ministry, becoming an Ordained Minister in the Church of God (Cleveland, TN). He was a member of Harvest Hills Church of God, where he served as the Young Adult and Discipleship Pastor and as a member of the Elder’s Board. Prior to his passing, Matthew was pursuing his Master of Divinity degree at Liberty University with the goal of going into full-time ministry. He aimed to preach the truth of the gospel, that others might be saved and come to know Jesus Christ, the One He loved most. He always wore a smile, was unwavering in faith, and was joyful through adversity.

Surviving are his wife, Angela Williamson, and his parents, Rev. Gregory and Brenda Williamson; his sister, Holly Bolick and husband, Michael; a niece, Ali Grace Bolick; a nephew, Mitchell Allen Bolick; his in-laws, Marilyn Willis, David Willis and wife, Tammy; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and “Aunt” Lynn. Matthew was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hassell and Mabel Stutts; and his paternal grandparents, Jesse and Gertrude Williamson.

The celebration of life service will be held at 3:30 pm, Saturday, August 5th, 2023 at Harvest Hills Church of God, 3110 South Maple Avenue, Burlington, NC, by Dr. Russell A. Morris. “I am reassured that God remains faithful through all of life’s circumstances. Since our hope remains in Him, not in this life, we are able to maintain a confident trust in His love and in His goodness – that His plan, whatever it may be – is always the best plan.” - Matthew Williamson
