Max Wayne Sharpe, 94 passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at Wesley Long Hospital. Born on October 8, 1931, in Alamance County, he was the son of the late Lewis Henry and Jennie Perkins Sharpe and was married for over 52 years to the love of his life, Josephine Campbell Sharpe, who passed away in 2010.
Max served in the U.S. Army where he received the National Defense Service Medal. Throughout his extensive career in banking, Max held numerous roles, demonstrating a remarkable versatility and leadership that earned him respect among colleagues and clients alike. His professional journey was underpinned by a deep commitment to lifelong learning, having pursued numerous executive programs across various esteemed educational institutions. This dedication to education reflected a man eager to grow and adapt in an ever-changing world.
Max’s love for music was a defining aspect of his character. He was not only an accomplished musician but also an important member of Greensboro Big Band and Greensboro Concert Band, where his mastery of multiple instruments brought joy and inspiration to many. His passion for music began early, playing in the Williams High School Band, and it remained a cherished part of his life. Additionally, his interest in history enriched his perspective and conversations, further highlighting his multifaceted personality.
Max is survived by his children, Anne Ferguson and her husband James “Jim” Gordon, and Michael Sharpe of Gibsonville. He was a proud grandfather to Steven Ferguson and Kathryn Hollowell, and a great-grandfather to Amy Ferguson. His family also included numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine, parents, Lewis and Jennie Sharpe as well as 1 brother and 3 sisters.
Max will be laid to rest at Magnolia Cemetery following a private service for the family.
