Melba Jean Terry Phillips, a beloved soul who brightened the lives of all who had the privilege to know her, transitioned to her heavenly home on May 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 23, 1950, in Bertie County, Melba was a shining light, characterized by her selflessness and unwavering encouragement. Her warm spirit and generous heart earned her the endearing title of a ray of sunshine among friends and family alike. Melba was the true life of the party. With her quick whit and infectious humor, she would light up every gathering, effortlessly joking with friends and bringing smiles to their faces.
Melba embraced a variety of interests that reflected her joyful personality. She cherished the magic of Hallmark movies and the timeless charm of Disney, but it was Christmas that captured her heart like no other holiday. The joy of the season embodied her spirit—bringing loved ones together, sharing laughter, and spreading cheer, while celebrating the birth of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Melba’s artistic talents flourished in her youth when she graced the stage in various theatrical productions, most notably in “Hello Dolly.” Her passion for performance showcased not only her talent but also her ability to connect with others through shared stories and emotions.
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Michael Phillips, and her children, Stefanie Horton (Tommy) and Daniel Joyner. Melba was also a loving stepmother to Allison and Emily Phillips. The joy she brought into their lives is reflected in her precious grandchildren, "Grammy's little dumplin's"—Ashlyn, Noah, Callie, and Carson—who will forever hold cherished memories of their grandmother's love and warmth.
Melba is survived by her brothers, Wilbert Terry and Bobby Terry (Linda), and her sister, Ann Smith; uncle, Earl Wayne Perry; sister-in-laws, Jean Cooke, Jane Shoffner and Joyce Clark (Steve), alongside many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, who will miss her dearly. She is preceded in death by her father, Walter McCoy Terry, her mother, Myrtle Perry Terry, and her brothers, Kenny Terry and Coy Terry.
A Celebration of life will be held 2:00PM on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Burlington Christian Church, 301 Trail 4, Burlington, NC 27215. Family will receive friends after the service.
Melba’s spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched. She will be missed deeply and remembered fondly, her light illuminating the path for us all.
