Melvin Daniel "Bud" Barber, 91, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025 at the Hospice Home in Burlington surrounded by his family. He was born in Ossipee on December 7, 1933 to the late James Harlon and Minnie Jones Barber. Around the age of 4 the family moved to the Barber homeplace/farm on Osceola Ossipee Road and he spent the remainder of his life there tending the farm and loving outdoor life. Bud was honored to be a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He loved his country and was proud to be a paratrooper. He worked at Glenn Raven Hosiery Mill for 10 years and retired from P. Lorillard after 32 years of service.
Bud was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved to travel and see all of God’s beautiful creations. In his younger years he was a race car driver at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, and after hanging up his helmet, he enjoyed watching NASCAR races and pulling for a Ford to win. He was one of the biggest Duke basketball fans around and proudly wore his collection of Duke apparel everywhere he went. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and served as an usher. Bud will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him but we find comfort in knowing that we will see him again one day.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Bud's in home caregiver, Vanessa for all of her loving care and support that she showed Bud during his illness. He so enjoyed her company and all the many stories that they shared together. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Hospice Home for all their wonderful care during his final days.
He is survived by his current wife, Sylvia Barber; his daughters, Debbie Satterfield and Angie (David) Brame; three grandsons, Daniel Satterfield, Wesley (Mallory) Brame and Bo (Haley) Brame; five great grandchildren, Sadie, Savannah, Cooper, Kennedy and Cassidy Brame; brother, Curtis Barber; four step-sons, Brian (Caressa) Oakes, Chris (Brooke) Oakes, Matthew (Faith) Oakes, Alan (Ashley) Oakes; one step-daughter, Lori (Tim) Carroll; thirteen step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
