Rachel Loftis Smith

Apr 17, 1938 — Jun 12, 2026

Burlington

Rachel Loftis Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, went to be with her Savior on Friday, June 12, 2026. Born on April 17, 1938, Rachel's life was the embodiment of a Proverbs 31 woman. She will be remembered for her genuine deep abiding faith, her unconditional love for her family and friends, her steadfast devotion and service to anyone in need, and an infectious joy and a zeal for life that touched all who knew her.

She was a longtime member of Staley Memorial Baptist Church where she spent many years serving in different ministries and participating in church activities. Her favorites were Vacation Bible School and the Mother’s Day Dinner. She was never without a cake in hand when she served the families of her church and her community. Professionally, Rachel devoted 25 years of her life to General Electric, where she built a noteworthy career marked by hard work and commitment. Her journey did not end with retirement; she continued by working with Smith Drapery and later at Belk Department Store, exemplifying her enduring work ethic and sweet spirit. Full of an abundance of life and energy, Rachel embraced new hobbies with the spirit of someone half her age—taking up line dancing, sewing, crocheting, bowling, and enjoying outings to listen to gospel music. She also loved taking trips in her RV with her loving husband Raymond. Wherever Rachel went her seven Yorkies were never far behind.

Above all, Rachel loved her children and grandchildren deeply, always placing the needs of her family at the center of her life. Her servant’s heart and compassionate nature leave a mark on all that she loved so well. The impact on all those who knew her will last long after her passing.

Rachel is survived by her devoted children: Darlene Evans (Ray), Cindy Nance (Steve), Lisa Cagle (Mark), Kim Kleu (Jon), and Lee Smith (Eve). She was a proud grandmother to Maegan Whitehurst (Jason), Mallory Faix (Carson), Marshall Evans (Ashton), Carlie Smith, Kayley Nance, Alexandria Brenner (Brad), Adam Cagle, Kasey Bowers (Will), Kristi and Nick Kleu. Her legacy of love continues in her eleven great-grandchildren: Mia, Ben, Addie Mae, CoCo (Collins), Ella Rachel, Boston Olivia (Bo), Lucie Rachel, Kaeson, LaLa (Sophia), Londyn, Beau. Rachel also leaves behind her loving siblings: sisters Vickie Rumley (Bobby) and Brenda Handy (Guy), and brothers Bobby Loftis (Brenda) and Roger Loftis (Judy) and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond Lee Smith, her parents Leroy Loftis and Lorena Smith Loftis, her brothers Carlis, Gene, and Donald, her sisters Violet, Marylou, and Helen and many precious nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Lowe Funeral Home Crematory, with the service to follow in the Chapel. The committal service will follow at Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lou Williams and her dog Wally that she shared with mom. Lou was Rachel’s longtime caregiver and best friend, whose compassionate care, guidance, and support were invaluable during Rachel’s later years. Her kindness during this difficult time will never be forgotten.

The family will be gathering and receiving friends prior to, and following, the services at the home of Darlene and Ray Evans.
