Rebecca Settle Springer

April 8, 1948 — May 30, 2025

Wilmington, NC

Rebecca Settle Springer, 77, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025. She was born in Rockingham, North Carolina, to Hiram Dixon Settle and Nina Privett Settle. In 1967, Rebecca married the love of her life, Arthur Conrad Springer. They shared 54 years of marriage filled with deep love and devotion until his passing in 2022.

Rebecca dedicated her life to the care and healing of others. She graduated from Rex Hospital School of Nursing in 1968 and later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After college, she worked as a nurse at Dorothea Dix Hospital, where her commitment to mental health and patient dignity began to take root. Later in life, Rebecca became a licensed practitioner of Healing Touch. She brought this integrative, heartcentered therapy to her work at Alamance Regional Medical Center (ARMC), where her healing presence comforted countless patients and families. Rebecca was also a tireless volunteer. She gave her time and talents to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), serving on the Alamance-Caswell-Rockingham board. She participated in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), helping law enforcement respond compassionately to individuals in crisis, and volunteered with Residential Treatment Services to support those detoxing from drugs and alcohol. As Activities Director at Twin Lakes Assisted Living Facility, she brought energy and connection to the lives of seniors. A devoted foster parent, Rebecca cared for numerous newborns over the years—especially those with medical needs—offering them love, safety, and a strong start in life. She was also an avid gardener and a dedicated walker, covering three miles a day well into her later years. Known for her huge heart and quiet strength, she would do anything for anyone in need. Rebecca’s Christian faith was a guiding force throughout her life. Her compassion, service, and commitment to healing were grounded in a deep and steady belief in Christ’s love.

She is survived by her three children: Jessica Atkinson, Benjamin Springer and David Springer (Jennifer); and her four grandchildren: Johnny Atkinson, Ellie Atkinson, Brantley Springer, and Eli Springer. Her compassion, humor, and unwavering care will live on in all who knew and loved her. In accordance with her final wish, Rebecca’s body has been donated to science, continuing her lifelong commitment to healing and learning.

A memorial service and visitation will be held at Lowe Funeral Home on June 12th at 1:00 PM. Friends and loved ones are warmly invited to gather in celebration of a life beautifully lived. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to NAMI.
