Gibsonville – On the morning of Good Friday, April 3, 2026, Rebecca Marlene Swanger, 92, went home to see Jesus. She was born in Catawba County on December 18, 1933 to the late Everette Marcellous and Mamie Lee Harvey Dellinger and was the wife of 70 years to the late James Lawrence Swanger, Jr.
Marlene was a long time member of Peoples Memorial Christian Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served on the Lady’s Circle. She was also a member of the local Christian Women’s Group and retired from Lucent Technologies (AT&T) after over 30 years of service. She enjoyed playing the piano, shopping, and keeping a tidy home. Most of all she cherished time spent with her family and taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Marlene was a selfless individual who loved serving others. She opened her home to countless missionaries, evangelists, southern gospel groups and anyone who enjoyed a good home-cooked meal. Nightly, you would find her reading her Bible, devotions and praying faithfully for her family.
Marlene is survived by her sons, Darrell Swanger (Karen) and Bobby Swanger (Linda); grandchildren, Angela “Angie” Bunting (Chris), Michael Swanger (Ashley), Jamie Johnson, Regina Nall (Seth) and Hannah Carmon (Will); great grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Davis, Karlee Johnson, Peyton and Gracin Nall, Leigha, Leighton, Madden, McKinleigh, Lawson, Travis Luke and Maiyah Swanger; a sister, Janna Kay Waitman (Bobby); sister-in-law, Charlotte Dellinger and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; daughter, Janice Rebecca Swanger; brother, William “Banks” Dellinger and grandson-in-law, Travis Johnson.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Shields and Rev. Daniel Webster with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:45 prior to the service at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the home.
A special thank you to the Hospice Nurses for their loving care shown to Marlene during her transition from this temporary life to her eternal home in Heaven.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
