Burlington REV. JOHN SETTLEMYRE Rev. John William Settlemyre, age 86, of 4656 Mt. Vernon Church Rd. passed away at 7:55pm January 11, 2013 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of Alamance County for 40 years. In 1972 he recieved and accepted a call to become the pastor of Union Ridge United Church of Christ where he served for 18 years. A native of Conover, NC, he was born in 1926 to the late Floyd Anthony Settlemyre and Frances Moore Settlemyre Faw. He attended Catawba County schools and later graduated from Catawba College where he was President of his Senior Class. He then pursued his chosen profession. He decided early in life to enter the Christian Ministry. After attending the Theology Seminary in Lancaster, PA, he began his ministry at a 3 point charge in Guilford County. He then served Mt. Hope UCC, First UCC in High Point and Union Ridge UCC where he was honored as "pastor emeritus". During his ministerial career he attended University of N.C., Greensboro where he received his Masters Degree in Counseling in the field of education. During his career in High Point, he was one of the organizers of the first kindergarten for handicapped and former Chairman of the Board. Rev. Settlemyre served as the Chairman of the Board during the organizational years of the United Church of Christ Retirement Homes Communities in N.C. Following his retirement in 1991 he served a number of churchs on an interim basis, including Carolina Christian Church, Long Chapel and Concord Christian Church. During retirement, he was an avid quail hunter, golfer and loved collecting and repairing crocks and working with antique clocks. He was well loved in the churches he served and was remembered by many in those congregations. Survivors include his wife, Betty Pfaff Settlemyre of the home; daughter, Betty Kim Settlemyre of Burlington; brother, Terry Robert Settlemyre and wife, Sylvia and daughter Julie of Hickory; sister-in-law Winifred "Bobbie" Queen of Winston-Salem and nieces Stacie Queen and husband Todd and Bronwynn Queen and husband Alex. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, James Anthony "Tony" Settlemyre and daughter, Terri Lynn Settlemyre. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Monday, January, 14, 2013 at Union Ridge Church by Rev. Dan Ficklin, pastor, assisted by Rev. Jim Rosser, Rev. Lloyd Spencer and Dr. Sam Scott. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery in Guilford County. Rev. Settlemyre will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory until being taken to the church to lie in state 1 hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home from 5-7pm Sunday and again from 1:00-1:45pm Monday in the fellowship hall of the church, prior to the service.
